The opportunity

In order to create futureproof cities we must unlock and exploit the potential functionality of rooftops in our urban landscapes. Unused rooftops should be transformed into functional landscapes, or Roofscapes. Roofscapes can be designed to conserve and/or generate energy, manage rainwater, create space for biodiversity and space for people to stay in, or any smart combination thereof.

Ecosystem functioning is our main guide in designing blue-green systems in which water, energy and matter come together to transform black useless surfaces into green oasis of functionality. In this approach roofs are no longer just there to keep the rain out, but become an integral and functional part of the building they are on, and the environment they are in.
